Roman Khrennikov Shares Training Highlights While Prepping for 2023 CrossFit Games

He has been seriously working for this year’s competition.

CrossFit Games 2022 men’s runner-up Roman Khrennikov has his sights set on moving up to that last spot and overtaking two-time defending champion Justin Medeiros at the 2023 Games in Madison, WI, the week of August 1-6. Khrennikov qualified for the Games thanks to his fourth-place finish in the North American East Semifinal.

She made the most of the last month of preparation for the Games by spending her time training in a variety of disciplines necessary for CrossFit success. Along the way, she’s been documenting her progress on Instagram and sharing it with her 129,000 followers.

On June 30, 2023, Khrennikov posted a video of himself performing gymnastics in the ring with an added twist for the upper body. He would do one more dip before coming back down for the next rep. The video clip doesn’t appear to show a full set, but Khrennikov can be seen performing four full reps of this advanced move.

The elite CrossFitter has also been putting the metcon machines to the test. Two days before his in-ring workout, Khrennikov was shown working on a superset of pedaling and rowing on an air bike. He did not disclose the specific “calories burned” or time spent for any of the exercises.

Last but not least, Khrennikov has shown that he can still move a lot of weight on strength-focused lifts, like this series of 205-pound (93-kilogram) snatches, which he lifted for three explosive reps. He shared this training clip on June 19, 2023 and specified in the caption that it was “[six] weeks before the CrossFit Games.”

Khrennikov is one of several athletes looking to knock Medeiros off the top spot and avoid a “triple headline” at the Games on the men’s side of the field. Other top contenders who have previously finished second at the Games include Patrick Vellner (2018, 2021), Samuel Kwant (2020) and Noah Ohlsen (2019), each of whom also qualified for the 2023 Games.

Khrennikov’s runner-up finish in 2022 was the highest placing at the Games in his career. He was ranked 13th at the 2020 Games, but did not compete in the sport’s championships in 2021 or 2018 despite being ranked.

As for the reigning champion he’s trying to unseat, Medeiros is working to become the third men’s champion to win three titles in a row. Mat Fraser won five titles (2016-2020) and Rich Froning Jr. won four titles (2011-2014). Both Froning Jr. and Fraser ended their careers as champions. Ben Smith won the only title to separate the reigns of Froning Jr. and Fraser when he became the Fittest Man on Earth in 2015.
